Intentions Week 4

Intentions Week 4

This week i have begun sampling with the test fabrics i had dyed the previous week.  Before sampling i was feeling a bit apprehensive to start, i was struggling with how i wanted to get my ideas from drawings into fabric designs. To make sampling easier to start i made a series of small collages, playing around with composition and colors based on the set of drawing i have so far. I think this has helped a lot before sampling as it has made sure my samples will still correlate to my drawings and have a playful approach to them.

Choosing a design to sample i began thinking of how i could convey it in to fabric. Keeping with the playfulness i looked at the lines and visualized them as stuffed pink tubes on a playful applique back ground with beaded sections. I found that having 3D elements come off a flat surface excited me so i should incorporate this more in to further samples. Thinking about how i can link the 3D elements in to my work i created a mind map about the structure and history of the machinery my project has been around and how i could possibly contrast that.

Feeling a little lost with my samples, the group 2 tutor review had a really positive impact on me. They said that i had a strong body of work that i can generate samples off and that i need to start making instead of worrying about the outcome. I was told i should also convey the dimensions in my drawings into the samples i make with layers of 'stuff'. i should also upscale the work im producing, playing around with size and composition. They also mentioned the photocopies of my work in the base room could be played with to see how i can mix and compose my work in to samples. The main thing i got from my tutorial was to play around with my samples and not be too precious with what i create as failed designs inspire new ones.
Another thing we discussed was to feed in the armories with my current project to allow me to stick with the same path of ideas im looking at.

Next week i am aiming to dye more samples so i can have a greater amount of fabric to work with so i can dedicate the whole rest of the week to sampling and starting to feed in the armories to the project.
