Week 3 & 4 (self initiated)

The past two weeks have been intense involving long hand manipulated processes to create interesting surfaces to fit the brief. I have begun playing with silicone squeezing it in to long lines, drying it, peeling it off and cutting in to bead shapes i can sew in to samples. I was surprised how flexible the material was and how easy it was to peel and cut.

The first sample i had created i tried to replicate icicles in compact areas i.e caves, this was very labourous making the silicone beads and stitching then standing up in the order intended. It took over 3 days of intense work as they were all individually stitched but it was worth it as it created the icy complex look i intended.

Another sample i played with beading using clear fabric and sequins to try to reflect the slippery transparency.

I have also explored reflecting my drawings of the polar landscapes through applique and abstract machine embroidery.  Exploring further possibilites with silicone spreading it out and drying it so it turns in to a fabric of itself that i can manipulate.

Research has been an important part of this project for me to be able to develop my ideas and connect context to them.
Visiting the library i was able to find numerous artists/designers that have been inspired by similar ideas and similar techniques.

Mona Hatoum
For example Mona Hatoum who in one of her pieces manipulates silicone and almost makes it in to a fabric form.
Christian Dior S/S 2014

I am pleased with progress i have made this project, i feel like my technique in embroidery is getting better and i am working more efficiently to each brief.
